Cooking: Five Tips On Cooking Food
by Owen Jones on May.24, 2010, under Uncategorized
There can not be many people who do not enjoy their food, but the human race, being what it is, I suppose that there are a a small number of them. However, for the remainder of us, cuisine is a font of daily enjoyment and, like a beverage, it is often used to denote a happy event. not only that, but various foods are used for the various meals or distinct celebrations.
Festive meals were undoubtedly considered around the seasonal foodstuffs on hand, but a number of foodstuffs were ferried great distances for the consumption of those who could meet the expense of them. For instance, my Dad considered it a great luxury to be given an orange in his stocking on Christmas Day sixty years past. How the times have changed! Very few kids would think an orange a present, special or otherwise, any day of the year these days.
Nevertheless, the storage of food is still a daily concern and subsequently, I have written a few good tips on preserving food underneath, so that you will obtain the best from that which you have purchased or grown in your garden even a long while later.
Chicken Stuffed With Spoons: a great way of preparing chicken to be eaten at a cold buffet or in sandwiches, is to put as many spoons as possible into the cavity of the chicken (not silver or plated ones though). Then, place the chicken in a large saucepan or pot and bring the water to the boil slowly. Simmer for 10 minutes, cover and leave until the water is room temperature. The spoons will retain the heat and cook the chicken from the inside out. it will be one of the most succulent chickens you have ever eaten.
Roasted Crisp And Light: if you like crisp-skinned roasties, it is best to parboil them first, but that is only half the story. so, boil the potatoes for five minutes and drain thoroughly. Put the lid on the pan and shake it about violently. Bang it hard on the chopping block several times. The harder the better. Then put the parboiled potatoes in the baking tray with the meat or fowl to cook as you would normally.
Salad Soup: Do not throw away salad that has been soaked in salad dressing. Whisk it up in a food processor with a can of tomatoes of tinned soup. Add lots of garlic to taste and adjust the thickness to suit your taste. Chill it down and you will have one of the most delicious summer soups ever.
Curdling Cure: if your mayonnaise has curdled there is one sure fire way to bring it back to life. stir in a couple of tablespoons of Hellmann’s mayonnaise and your problem will be over.
Simply Scrumptious Topping: a really, quick, delicious and almost infinitely variable topping for a savory pie can be made in seconds. Choose the flavour you want from the crisp rack; puncture the bag to let our the air and then crush the contents in the gag. it really adds something to a pie. The same trick can be used on the bottom of a potato pie a Texan housewife told me.

An All-Inclusive Hotel Or An All-Inclusive Resort?
by Owen Jones on May.23, 2010, under Uncategorized
If you are arranging to go on vacation this year, how are you thinking of going about it? There are several options to explore, if you begin planning early enough. There are the self-planned, ‘I will find a hotel when I get there’ style; there are cruises and there are package vacations.
The self planned is for those without children and is more adventurous. Cruises are great, if you like being on the water more than being on land and there are the package holidays, some of which are all-inclusive package vacations.
If you choose a vacation package, you have the choice of looking for an all-inclusive resort or an all-inclusive hotel. There is not much to choose between them, if you are going alone or with your spouse, but if you are taking children, the all-inclusive resort is the one for you.
This is because all-inclusive hotel rooms can be on the small side and if you have a small child or even children with you, your room will soon become overcrowded and suites are more expensive. An all-inclusive resort, on the other hand, will usually provide accommodation in the form of cabins or chalets, which are designed with young families in mind.
You do not want to be staying on the 12th floor of a large hotel with toddlers, because either they have to stay in the room until you want to go out, in which case they might get grumpy or they might learn how to get out and wander off in the hotel. A chalet, however, will inevitably be on the ground floor, usually be in groups, so that you can help keep an eye on each other’s kids and may even have a small garden with a fence.
Whether you go to an all-inclusive hotel or an all-inclusive resort really depends on whether you have or can put up with children. If you have children then a resort is for you, if you do not like children’s racket, then you would be better suited to an all-inclusive vacation in a hotel.
Once you have chosen your kind of all-inclusive package vacation, the rest is plain sailing. Actually what is all-included in these style hotels and resorts can vary quite widely, so you should make sure you know well in advance. Cost is a good clue. If one resort at the same destination is much cheaper than the others, look into it more carefully before booking.
Often the disparity will only be in degree. For example, an all-inclusive hotel or resort may offer the free use of diving equipment, but when you read on it might restrict that to non-mechanical diving equipment, so you only get a mask, snorkel and flippers. Others may only have ten sets of equipment – first come first served.
However, having said that, most all-inclusive package vacations are incredible deals. They include your transport to and from your home town to the destination, which depends on you and where the resort is of course. For St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands transportation could be by cruise or flight – you must determine that at the outset. Having to travel 500 miles to Orlando by bus or train with three young children may not be much fun.
When you get there, they almost always include all your food and snacks and all soft drinks, tea and coffee, beer and non-branded spirits. An all-inclusive will also include all fees to on-site entertainment. That means the, pool, the club house, pool, snooker, table tennis, the gym etc, and access to any private beach attached to the hotel. It will also include night time shows usually.

Food: Some Great Tips
by Owen Jones on May.22, 2010, under Uncategorized
With a world population in excess of six billion people, we are all becoming increasingly aware that food is a scarce resource. Traditionally, people have not seen food as a resource, but more of a birthright. However, the inhabitants of many Third World countries are required to be more pragmatic.
We in the West are constantly bombarded by implorations for donations by charities and I think that many people are getting a bit tired of it. I also think that people are mistrustful of the charity workers’ expenses and costs, particularly after the MPs’ expenses scandal in the UK. So, what can you do, if you want to make some sort of contribution?
I think that the best thing one can do is not to squander food. Not squandering or wasting food will reduce the quantity you have to buy, which will leave more on the supermarket shelves. This will augment supply, which will reduce prices. Therefore, by not buying so much food, you will be saving money and reducing the price of what you do purchase. Can not be bad, can it?
So, here are a few of my favourite money-saving tips.
Funnel – I have bought a few funnels in my time, but they always seemed to have fallen to the back of the cupboard when I needed one. I do not buy them anymore. Instead, I cut the top 9″ off the top of a plastic cola bottle. When I am done with it, I throw it away, particularly if I used it for pouring oil.
Microwave – sometimes, when you open the microwave oven door, a whiff of the last meal comes out. Instead of spending money on sprays or what-not, put a slice of lemon in a saucer of water and microwave it for three minutes after every time you use it.
Cabbage – boiling cabbage really smells! However, there are three ways of hiding the smell without using air freshener. The first way is to put a slice of lemon in the cabbage water as it cooks. The second way is to boil a small pan of vinegar next to the cooking cabbage and the third is to place a sieve over the cooking cabbage and put a round of stale bread in it. These techniques work because the lemon cancels the smell of the cabbage as does the vinegar and the stale bread absorbs the smell.
Fish Fingers – it is not nice to have smelly fingers after preparing fish, onions or garlic. As an alternative to washing and washing your hands, rub a little lemon juice on them and rinse for instant relief.
Sponge – a tablespoon of hot water whisked into a sponge mixture at the last minute will greatly enhance the rise and the texture of the cake.

My First Night In Pattaya, Thailand
by Owen Jones on May.22, 2010, under Uncategorized
It was seven-ish and I was sitting in a nice-enough room overlooking the front doorway to the pub above which I had just moved in. The pub was the Pig and Whistle on Soi 7 in Pattaya. Across the lane was a big hole, which they were hoping to construct a hotel in and next door to that, right opposite me, was a small bar with one woman sitting on a stool outside it. Not that there was a wall there, it was open on two sides. The Soi was lovely and quiet, I thought. I also thought that I might go and sit in that little bar and talk to that woman, if my friend was late, because I would definitely see him arrive from two metres away, the width of the Soi.
So, I went to the bar in the pub at 19:15 to await my friend who said he would come at 20:00. It was much busier than thirty minutes earlier but not noisy and I sat at the bar. The first thing a barmaid did was say hello, give me a menu and step back. I did not really want to eat, I only wanted a beer as I presumed we would be eating together later, but I wanted to read the menu anyway.
‘A pint of Boddington’s’, I said. It arrived and the girl began laying a setting for me. I tried to explain that I was not hungry, but it was no good. Like in Spain, most people eat and drink at the same time. All the while the girl was smiling at me. Then she said: ‘You live upstairs? My name Charli. What you want to eat?’. So, I gave in and ordered something and rice.
‘You first time in Thailand? You no can eat. Too spicy’, she said with a grin. ‘Oh’, I replied, ‘but I want to try. ‘I put only 50-50 for you’, she declared and went.
I struggled through that meal and it took a Boddingtons and a bottle of water. Charli had been accurate, it was too hot for first-time foreign visitors and she had reduced the chilis by 50%. I have always heeded a Thai’s counsel on food ever since.
I changed seat to by the window to see what was happening as it was dark by 19:30 and I was curious. Within thirty minutes Soi 7 had transformed itself totally. I could see hundreds of young women and tourists milling about. I wanted to go out and join in or at least sit in the quiet bar across the lane, but I’m ashamed to say that I was too frightened, so I sat put, rivetted to the Pig like a rabbit in a hunter’s flashlight.
My friend arrived on time and after we had been chatting for an hour, he said: ‘Drink up, I have someone I want you to meet’. This was it, we were going into that mele. A waitress held the door for us and the noise and the heat were tremendous. Especially the noise. Every metre at least two or three girls would yell: ‘Hello, sexy man, you want a drink’. Trying to say no courteously to each call was impractical, so I just stuck close to my pal.
Fortunately, we only had about fifty metres to walk and we sat down in another bar. My friend said hello to several ladies and then said, this a girl I have been going out with for some time. I was astounded as I had never heard him talk about her, ever. She was gorgeous, but could not speak English, so I sat in the din in silence. Not for long through, as my friend said, I have a blind date for you and he introduced another girl to me who was equally beautiful, but with whom I could speak a little. She was captivating and I was captivated. The din seemed to pass away, but it was only because I was listening to my new friend. The four of us had the best time and the best food I had ever had in my forty-nine years of existence.

The Perfect Barbecue
by Owen Jones on May.21, 2010, under Uncategorized
The three most essential components of any barbecue party are the guests, the weather and the food. I can not make suggestions about your friends and family, you are on your own there, but I hope you will find my suggestions for the other two fronts practical.
An unplanned party in the garden is great and often the best parties are the ones that just happen off the cuff, but if you want something a little more formal or more notable then you have to organize. The first step is to pick a date far enough in the future for most people to be unlikely to have a prior engagement, but not so far that they might forget about your barbecue party.
Depending on where you live of course, try to pick a date when it is not likely to be cool or wet. This is hard in places like the UK, but may be easier where you live. If the party goes on into the night it may get chilly anyway and you could hire a few gas patio heaters in advance just in case. You could also have a sunshade or sheltered seating area in case of blazing sunshine or a light shower.
These days a lot of people are vegetarian and you will have to plan in advance for them and other dieters, if they make up a sizable number of your guests. You could send out RSVP invitations and ask your guests to make known any special dietary demands. I am not really suggesting that you have to cater to everybody, but if you have a lot of Jews or Arabs coming you will need to provide an alternative to pork chops and of course there are other minorities too.
In fact, you may have to do some research on the religions of the people coming to your barbecue party, because often cooking utensils may not have touched pork of meat or shellfish. Most people of the guests with these dietary requirements will have been in this situation before and will understand if you go some way to providing an alternative.
For this reason, you will need to get your RSVP cards back at least a week before your barbecue party and do a bit of research on the telephone or the Internet. Then start making up the barbecue side dishes. These should include baked or and boiled jacket potatoes and potato salad, baked beans, egg quarters and coleslaw along with pickles, relish, onions, chutneys tomato and curry sauces (hot and not so hot), as most people will eat them. These can be prepared a few days in advance and kept in Tupperware containers in the fridge. Bread in the form of buns is also essential so that people can make sandwiches.
It is imperative for a polished act, to have your party area fully prepared before your guests turn up. it is a good idea to set the music system up in the garden shed or the garage to save it from any sudden shower. Provide plenty of tissues for wiping greasy fingers and plenty of receptacles for the debris. Finger bowls with lemon water would be a good idea for this purpose too.

Superior Cruises
by Owen Jones on May.17, 2010, under Uncategorized
If you enjoy travelling and seeing new destinations, I advocate a cruise. I have cruised the Mediterranean and the Baltic and my next cruise will be a Caribbean cruise. I am genuinely looking forward to it. If you have never been on a cruise, start saving up now, because it is luxury like you have never imagined before.
Never having been on a Caribbean cruise before, I do not know how much the various Caribbean islands differ from one another, so I do not know how varied that cruise would be. However, I have cruised the Med and the Baltic and woken up to a different country every day and in both of those seas and every country is very different from its neighbours.
On our Baltic cruise we left from Southampton and cruised to Gothenburg in Sweden. From there we went to Helsinki and Leningrad (in those days). On the way back, we called into Copenhagen and the Tivoli Gardens. None of those countries was in any way similar to another or even Britain.
Similarly, my Mediterranean cruise left from Minorca in north eastern Spain going east to Sardinia and then north along the southern coast of Europe. Italy, France and Spain. The second week of the cruise left Minorca again and went to Sicily and then south along the northern coast of Africa including Malta.
The luxury on a cruise is almost indescribable to someone who has never been on a cruise. There is no standard higher than five stars, but the cruises I have been on offered superior levels of luxury than any five star hotels I have stayed in anywhere in the world.
Food and shore excursions play a major part of cruising. The food is top notch with no mistake. Breakfast on a cruise liner is better than most Americans and most Europeans have for dinner. Whatever you want from prawns to steak, from exotic fruit to porridge. Lunch and dinner are even more lavish.
Shore excursions are well organized too. They include a ferry from the cruise liner to the land and then a coach trip by a local firm to the destination, which could be an historical site or a shopping mall. Most cruisers go on these trips, but some would rather stay on board and take advantage of the lower number of passengers and the free food.
I went on every shore excursion and thoroughly enjoyed each one. The excursions are usually pricey though, but you are part of a trapped audience, so what can you expect?
I thoroughly recommend a cruise holiday to any and every one. You should go at least once in your life, but do not leave it until late in your life because you will want to go again.

Get Dressed Quickly With These Fashion Looks
by Brenda Larsson on May.10, 2010, under Personal Finance
When a woman complains that she has nothing to wear, despite having plenty of clothes, this often means that she doesn’t have a unified style chosen to guide her wardrobe. When you have a closet full of different styles and pieces that don’t work together, and you are unsure what look you are going for, it can make for confusion when you try to dress.
Choosing an overall look will make getting dressed much easier. Here are a few options for looks to get you started:
The casual look: The casual look is simple, classic, and unfussy. A woman who chooses this look will come across as laid-back and no-fuss. For this look, pick basic unadorned components such as slacks, jackets, and plain t-shirts. You will want to stay away from the latest trends, as well as any clothing that is overly sexy or fussy.
Most of your clothing should be in classic colors as well. Think navy, grey, white, khaki, black. This look is a bit tomboyish because it is unadorned and does not subscribe to the trimmings of femininity (lace, florals, elaborate prints, etc.).
The bombshell look: In contrast, women who choose the bombshell look will play up their femininity with items that highlight the body in detail. If you have a figure that gives you bragging rights and you want to show it off, this is a great choice for you.
Choose items that cling to your body like softly draping fitted sweaters, slinky dresses in luxurious materials, and so on. Jeans should be tight and play up your curves. Don’t distract from your figure with overly patterned or fussy clothing.
The bohemian look: This look may seem like it would be easiest, because of the myth that women with the bohemian look can just ‘wear anything’ or throw an outfit together. This is a myth. The bohemian look actually takes a good bit of effort. You will be drawing inspiration from other cultures, from art, from different eras, and combining these elements into a look that is interesting, inspiring and workable.
Unlike the bombshell and the casual dresser, you should avoid plain colors. Think color and texture. Borrow inspiration from cultures around the world. Check out fashion photo blogs such as The Sartorialist for examples of how quirky dressing is managed in various countries. Just don’t go overboard. You want to look interesting and edgy, but not like you are wearing a costume.

How To Burn Belly Fat
by Owen Jones on May.09, 2010, under Uncategorized
Trying to burn off your belly fat is probably the most common reason for dieting. Next is trying to lose excess weight from one’s arms and legs, if you want to lose weight and get a trimmer body. Diet alone does not work well enough to get a flat abdomen, and many people are searching non stop for new techniques to try to complement their diet.
Occasionally the battle you have to fight takes years, while in more fortunate situations, you’ll be able to burn belly off fat in a few months. The time span necessary for such an achievement varies according to a series of personal factors: first of all it depends on how big the fat deposit is around your waist.
Then, your age, your health and certain other personal things affect the rate of weight loss considerably. You can burn belly fat at a more rapid rate if you stick to a training regimen made up of a series of well-determined exercises that include not only body crunches but also full body work.
Twists for example, have a great reputation for the toning of the abdominal muscles and the creation of a slimmer waistline. While you can maintain your calorie intake under control by carefully monitoring your diet, you can only burn your current deposits of fat with physical exercise.
Nutritional supplements can help you burn your belly fat off without having to suffer the consequences of a crash diet. Some of the most valued remedies for accelerating the metabolism include green tea extract, Garcinia Cambodia, pineapple extract, seaweed and other herbs with a stimulating impact on the digestive tract.
Be very careful with appetite suppressants because they do not burn belly fat like the rest of the supplements do, but rather they promote a feeling of satiation which tells your body that there is no need for it to long for food. However, if such a predicament gets out of control, the consumer of these weight loss supplements could develop anemia because of poor nutrition.
Do not try to burn your belly fat within a rigid, prearranged time frame. Setting seven or ten-day goals could put a lot of stress on the body, and besides a flatter stomach you may end up with serious health problems. Every body has its own way of adapting to diets. For instance, one’s level of activity alters with programs meant to speed up the metabolism.
If things are not done slowly but surely, the body will respond aggressively to the new stimuli, creating all sorts of discomforts such as diarrhea, exhaustion, anxiety, poor concentration and the so forth. So, choose those ways to burn belly fat off that best suit your condition, age and physical structure.

How To Enjoy Cooking For Two
by Owen Jones on May.08, 2010, under Uncategorized
Whether you are cooking for two for romance or out of obligation, you will discover that there are many resources online and off to help you find the best meals for your terrific twosomes. One thing to keep in mind however is that when cooking for two, it is sometimes better if two are doing the cooking. This permits cooking to become a chance for communication rather than just a chore.
Despite the fact that there are many resources and recipes available to those that are cooking for two, there are even more recipes for those cooking for four, especially the traditional recipes that are designed to feed a family of four. These provide an opening to stretch your food budget even further.
By cooking traditional meals for four and eating half of it, you have managed to cook two meals for the time investment of one. It is a good deal for many, but particularly for those that do not like the idea of cooking at all.
Young and older couples alike frequently find that it is as simple and almost the same cost to go to a fast food or other casual restaurant as it is to prepare a nice, healthy meal for two at home. The one thing they usually forget is that cooking for two can be an appealing way to bring a little romance into the evening.
When cooking for two, you will have as much occasion to be creative as in anything else you do in your life. You have the option of trying appetizing new recipes and the knowledge that if you do not like the meal, you are not throwing away a lot of money.
You can try mixing and matching flavors and textures. You can make works of art on your plate as in nouveau cuisine. Or you can go farmhouse style. Cooking for two opens doors that are not necessarily available when cooking for larger numbers with more limiting tastes.
Cooking for two is a great way to get your partner involved in the cooking process as well. When cooking for two you can find out the things that you both enjoy and those that are not so interesting to one or the other of you.
Make sure that when you are cooking for two that you induce an open and honest dialog about the things that you like and dislike about the meals being cooked. This will help you determine things to add to your regular menu as well as the things to avoid making a part of your dinner rotation.
Perhaps the best thing about cooking for two is the fact that you can afford to try special occasion cuisine more often when you are cooking for only two than when you are cooking for a larger crowd. Bring on the steaks and lobster tail. Learn how to make shrimp scampi and fillet mignon. Take the time, when cooking for two, to prepare those dishes that you enjoy most.
Cooking for two is a great way of exploring the culinary universe and exposing your palates to some wonderful surprises along the way. The Internet, bookstores, and libraries are filled with books about cooking for two. Take advantage of the chance to do just that and you will be flabbergasted at the world of flavors you have been missing out on.
